Major disruption planned by Extinction Rebellion Lewisham

by Cerelia June 13, 2019
June 13, 2019

Extinction Rebellion are planning to disrupt Lewisham commuters on Friday, 14 June between 7:00 and 9:00am at three major road junctions in Lewisham, Catford AND Deptford simultaneously.

Activists will be ‘swarming’, which involves stopping the traffic at pedestrian crossings for periods of up to 7 minutes, repeated over the chosen time period.

The reason for the action, in the activists’ own words: “WHO have stated air pollution is a public health emergency, affecting more than 90% of the global population and causing 8.8 million early deaths each year. Climate change and air pollution are closely linked so as the UN chief put it – we need to take action on air pollution to save lives, and the planet.”

“In response, Extinction Rebellion will be swarming three major road junctions in Lewisham, Catford AND Deptford simultaneously on Friday 14th June from 7:30 – 9:00am. We will be handing out information to the public and sending a clear message to the local council that the time to act is NOW.”

Extinction Rebellion are calling for volunteers – and especially samba bands, dancers and photographers – to join them. You can read more about the action here.
