Lewisham is one of the worst performing inner London boroughs when it comes to healthy streets, according to a coalition of transport, health, road safety and environment campaigns.
The Healthy Streets coalition ranks London Boroughs on how healthy their streets are according to 10 indicators which include low traffic neighbourhoods, 20mph speed limits, CPZs, protected cycle track provision, and bus priority.
It also includes data on accident rates and car ownership rates..
It hands out awards to London boroughs which recognise the links between public health and active travel and enable people to switch from cars to using public transport, walking and cycling instead.
It says the top performing London Boroughs in 2024 are Islington, City, Hackney, Camden and Southwark.
At the bottom of the table are Bexley, Hillingdon and Bromley with car-dominated environments failing to enable residents to switch to public transport, walking and cycling.
Well known for its LTNs and cycle routes, award winning Waltham Forest leads the way in Outer London, scoring higher than three Inner London Boroughs.
The worst performing Inner London boroughs are Kensington and Chelsea and Lewisham, according to Healthy Streets.
Lewisham is one of the best boroughs when it comes to traffic free school streets.
The Healthy Streets coalition has been tracking borough actions for the last six years.
It says most boroughs have done little or nothing over the past year on rolling out schemes to promote healthy streets. “Only a handful of boroughs are making any progress at all,” it adds.
Campaigners say all councils need to deliver like Islington and Waltham Forest every year. “Instead they talk loudly about the climate emergency but then dither and delay.”
