Gaff, an expanding coffee business that started out as a market stall in Deptford market, is opening a short-term community coffee shop in Catford.
The coffee shop will take over a new space created after the sudden closure of the Catford Mews cinema.
The Catford Regeneration Partnership Ltd has worked with th council and Gaff to quickly open the space. CRPL continues to work on securing a new operator for the Catford Mews.
The Gaff venue in Catford will remain open until a new operator is found for Catford Mews.
Gaff which operates three other coffee shops in Lewisham offers affordable coffee, tea, sweet and savoury food options and showcases the work of Lewisham artists such as Trevor Burgess.
Gaff is also committed to training the next generation of baristas and will use the new space to offer specialist training and employment for Lewisham residents
at a London Living Wage.
These opportunities have been facilitated by the Council’s award-winningLewisham Works employment service and three residents have already begun their training at the new Catford cafe.
“We are excited to offer up our walls for Lewisham artists to showcase their work and are open to working with any community groups who would like to meet in the new space,” says Sophie Carter, manager at Gaff Catford.
Councillor Kim Powell, Cabinet Member for Business, Jobs and Skills said Gaff was a community minded business, committed to training the next generation of baristas.
“When Lewisham businesses thrive, so does our whole borough,” Cllr Powell added.
