It’s back! Ladywell Fields cafe reopens after winter shutdown

Open again for business

Yes, it’s back. The Ladywell Fields cafe, which was shut unexpectedly by the Jimmy Mizen Trust late last year, has reopened.

The Ten Thousand Hands cafe, popular with walkers, cyclists, dog walkers and young families especially in the summer, was taken over by the charitable trust in 2014.

It raises money for the charity, which was set up in memory of Jimmy Mizen, the 16-year-old who was murdered in Lee in 2008.

The charity campaigns for safer and more peaceful communities and offers jobs to young people in its cafes.

Until recently the charity had three Lewisham cafes, which were set up as safe community spaces. The first, the Good Hope cafe in Hither Green, opened in 2010.

The charity also ran a cafe in the PLACE/Ladywell, on the site of the former leisure centre, until last year.

Park users were worried the closure of the Ladywell Fields cafe was permanent as it had suffered repeated burglaries.

Glendale, which is contracted by Lewisham to look after the borough’s green spaces,   maintained the area and the public toilets while the cafe was closed.
