The Ladywell Summer Festival, organised by the Ladywell Society and Global Fusion Music & Arts, an award winning charity, has gathered enough sponsors to ensure this year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever.

There will be a host of food and drink stalls from the local area including Ignition Brewery from Sydenham, Jay’s Budgens from Crofton Park, and Wilson’s, the new restaurant in Ladywell, plus much more besides.

The festival on June 30 from midday until 5.00pm will bring together more than 30 craft stalls showcasing a wide range of arts an crafts as well as a funfair and face painting. And GFMA will once again bringing a wide array of musical talent from all corners of the world

The festival will kick off with with Blackheath Morris dancing in the village. The dancers will then lead a procession to the entrance to Ladywell Fields where they will be joined by the Speaker of the council and the Chinese Dragon.

People are invited to join the the parade as it travels to the festival site. Along the way they will be joined by the Jack-in-the-Green, an old English folk custom in which someone carries a wooden conical frame decoarated with foliage.

When they arrive Blackheath Morris will dance in the festival arena in front of the stage and the Speaker will then officially open the festival.

The festival builds on the success of the original Ladywell Village week long festivals in the 1980s and the more recent incarnations which began in 2019 headlined by First Lady of Folk, Julie Felix. The early festivals always featured folk events with a nod to local history and heritage.

This year’s featival marks the 40th anniversary of the the Ladywell Society. It was founded in 1984 to oppose the building of industrial units in the centre of the Village at the stite of the original Well of Our Lady that gave it’s name to the Village and the surrounding.

The Ladywell Society has been partnering with GFMA for many years to bring community barn dances and great festivals with top quality music. GFMA has been pivotal to our social and community activities in Ladywell. The festivals celebrate our heritage and traditions whilst embracing the many cultures which now make up our community.

Ladywell’s summer festival of fun and music

The Ladywell Summer Festival, a great day of food, drink, kids’ entertainment and music,  will be back on June 30 – but it needs your support!

The organisers, the Ladywell Society and Global Fusion Music & Arts, an award winning charity, are hoping to raise £6,000 towards the up front costs of the event.

The Ladywell Society, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, says over £1,000 has been raised but it is keen to ensure the festival is bigger and better this year and becomes a fixture of the summer season in Lewisham.

The society and GFMA are offering local sponsors logos on posters and flyers, which will be delivered to more than 2,000 homes in the area as well as local schools and businesses. There’ll be lots of social media promotion and festival T-shirts (more details below).

This year’s festival, held in Ladywell Fields north field, will again see a host of diverse bands and performers organised by GFMA, lots of food and drinks, free kids’ entertainment, a funfair, more than 20 craftstalls, traditional Morris dancing and maypole, and many community stalls.

Beer and wine will also be on sale for the first time. The Lewisham based social enterprise Ignition Brewery, which employs and trains people with learning disabilities to brew and serve great beer, will be selling its range of beers. And Wilson’s wine bar will be serving wine.
