Finishing touches made to long awaited mural celebrating Lewisham’s suffragettes

Finishing touches have now been made to the mural commissioned by the Ladywell Assembly. It was originally planned for 2018 to mark the centenary of when some women finally won the vote.

The long delayed mural celebrates the role of Lewisham’s suffragettes and can be seen on Elmira Street under the railway bridge.

It was delayed for so long  because Network Rail had to carry out repairs to the bridge.

The mural was designed by Artmongers and features Rosa May Billinghurst, an outstanding suffragette who lived in Lewisham. She was a polio survivor (which left her unable to walk) and a wheelchair user who was dedicated to the fight for women’s rights.

Artmongers took on the challenge of creating the mural and managed to complete it in just over two weeks, with the help of a handful of volunteers.
