Lewisham celebrates Windrush Day on June 22

by Tony May 18, 2023
May 18, 2023

Lewisham will be celebrating the 75th anniversary of Windrush Day on June 22 2023 with an evening of live music, spoken word, dance and more at the Broadway Theatre, Catford.

Windrush Day marks the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks in 1948 carrying 500 people from the Caribbean.

The ship’s arrival has become symbolic of the generation of Commonwealth citizens who came to live in Britain between 1948 and 1971 to help rebuild the country after WW2. Many of the new arrivals settled in Lewisham and it’s their contribution to the borough, British culture and daily life that will be celebrated at the Broadway.

The evening will be hosted by Robbie Gee and Eddie Nestor. The performance starts at 7.00pm at the Broadway Theatre, Rushey Green, Catford, SE6 4RU. | Tickets are £5, £2 concessions and free for over 65s
