£5,000 needed to save the legendary Brockley Max Opening Night of free music

February 23, 2023

Over the last 15 years Brockley Max, the community arts festival, has held an opening night of free music.

But this year the legendary Opening Night is at risk.

“All our funding sources have dried up due to the cost of living squeeze that’s hurting everybody,” says Moira Tait, festival director.

“But we all need something to look forward to, and it would be wonderful to be able to ensure this amazing, free-to-attend, family-friendly music night can go ahead this year?”

Over the years the Opening Night has had hundreds of amazing acts over that time such as Athlete, Chainska Brassika, Koder and Prima Queen, as well as young bands starting out on their musical careers.

“We need to raise £5,000 by March 31 – can you help?”  says Moira.

Please donate to our GoFundMe page https://tinyurl.com/yr823h39 and make sure this amazing event takes place.

Check out the video of last year’s event on our fundraising page.

Vote for your Favourite Black Icon

Brockley Max is celebrating three of the many incredible women who have lived or worked in Lewisham and who have made a positive change to our community, or society.

The festival has been commissioned by the Mayor of London to create three murals of significant Black women – not just those who are famous, it could be someone less well-known who is a women activist, campaigner or champion of a cause and has had a real impact locally, nationally or internationally.

The project is part of Untold Stories – to provide context, insight or draw attention to invisible, contested or absent diverse heritage in London’s public spaces.

There are some amazing women from Lewisham!  And you can vote for your favourite  here:

All the women have been chosen by the public and you can find out who they are here:  https://brockleymax.co.uk/murals/.

Voting will close at the end of March. We will be painting the murals during the Brockley Max festival in May 2023, and filming the painting of the murals as a visual record.

Each mural will have a QR code to enable the public to find out more about the women and their work. You can also discover more about our three artists. And check out our schools competition here!
