Freedom to play – Lewisham surveys views of children and parents as it develops a plan for safe play spaces across the borough

Lewisham Council is developing a plan for play in the borough with the help of London Play, a specialist organisation which works to ensure children have the space, time and freedom to play.

London Play wants every child in London to have high quality, free play opportunities, near to where they live and recognises how important play is for our children’s and young people’s development.

It says space for play is threatened by encroaching development and traffic and is also being stifled by distorted perceptions of risk, and fear.

Lewisham wants to ensure the borough makes the best use of play resources to support all children and young people to enjoy play and thrive.

It is now asking as many children, young people, parents and carers as possible about:

  • Play facilities in the borough
  • The purpose and value of play (what it means to children and adults)
  • Ideas for future play development

This survey will help London Play produce an audit of play in the borough and begin to develop recommendations. There is also a separate survey for children and young people, which is being distributed through schools.

The two surveys set up by London Play are:
